Cat Rice

Craving in the mid of night, especially after doing some work, has never been easy to calm down just by going straight to sleep, making late supper a must for night owl-peeps; instant noodle and other quick meals become a must have item at home. However, having it all alone turns out to be boring as it feels like there is no other option to eat during night time, especially if the hungry one craves for fresh food. With this phenomenon, cat rice aka ‘sego kucing’ was introduced, providing variants of food, snacks, and also drinks served in small portion opening during night time usually.

Sego kucing’s name is based on a fact that cat doesn’t eat a lot, and so it matches with some people’s preference for not eating a lot at night despite feeling hungry. This later allows people to have more variants of dish on their plate 😀 It now sounds more interesting, right? Oh. Also, this dish was originated in Central Java and becomes more popular in other regions as well. For your reference, here is how it looks:

Alright, now that you guys get a better idea of what sego kucing is, I would like to share a bit of my fascinating experience last year in Solo, Central Java, a day before attending my friend’s wedding on the next day.

So, at around 8 PM, the four of us managed to get to this famous place for sego kucing in Solo called the Lawang Djoenjing. The name in fact represents its look – a gate leaning sideways as pictured below:

It serves variants of Indonesian traditional dish from snacks to drinks. All packed in small portions (except drinks). I like almost all the variants as they have both spicy and not spicy ones, and trust me it tastes good! I can still vividly remember how the roti maryam (chanai bread) tasted that time. It was so buttery and mixed well in harmony with the chocolate sprinkle. Sorry that I have no picture for this :p as the lighting of the place is too dark to take a picture – an opened area with big umbrellas covering each table and chair. The weather was really nice during night time there. It was mildly windy, and many people gathered with their friends while enjoying their food.

On top was a picture I took that time as it looks bright due to the light, and you can see the variant of the dishes on a pottery plate. What a nice Javanese style arrangement for food!

I would like to recommend everyone who plans to go to Solo to visit this place. However, feel free to share your experience in having any sego kucing in your cities 😀

Happy Cat Rice-ing peeps!
